About hemangiosarcoma

Cancer is the leading cause of death in dogs worldwide. Every year approximately 4 million dogs will be diagnosed with some form of cancer, and 50% of all dogs over the age of 10 will die as a result of developing the disease.

Canine hemangiosarcoma is a malignant tumor that originates from pluripotent bone marrow-derived progenitor cells, and it is ultimately fatal. Despite advances in treatment, dogs with visceral or cardiac hemangiosarcoma still have a poor prognosis and the disease is almost always incurable. Even in dogs with apparently localized disease, hemangiosarcoma cannot be cured by local therapy and adjuvant chemotherapy, and disseminated relapses inevitably occur after treatment. Reported median survival times after surgery and adjuvant doxorubicin-based chemotherapy range from 3 to 12 months, depending on the clinical stage at admission.

Likewise, angiosarcoma is an extremely aggressive cancer in human beings, although rare, accounting for 0.01%–0.1% of all cancers. Conversely, hemangiosarcoma is common in dogs. Recent transcriptomic analysis identified shared genetic alterations, underscoring a highly conserved biological behavior of hemangiosarcoma in both species. Due to the above, the canine model offers a unique opportunity to investigate new methods of stratification and to develop more effective ways to treat and prevent hemangiosarcoma, bridging the gaps and hopefully helping both, dogs and human beings.

What is comparative oncology

The dog is an alternative, powerful and exceptional model in oncology, not only because dog tumors are histologically and molecularly similar to humans, but also because dogs naturally develop cancers, have an intact immune system, and respond similarly to conventional therapies. Recent transcriptomic analysis identified shared genetic alterations, underscoring a highly conserved biological behavior of many cancers in both species.

As a consequence, canine trials offer a valuable opportunity to overcome obstacles associated with translational research, possibly bridging the gaps and speeding up the development of new anticancer treatments which will benefit both, dogs and human beings.

Midnight Foundation main focus is on innovation, new knowledge generation and rapid translation of discoveries from lab to clinic.

Goals

  • Link the efforts of veterinary comparative oncologists and scientists within different expertise field with the work of basic cancer researchers
  • Design canine clinical trials that are integrated into the development path of new cancer drugs or immune-therapeutics
  • Help creating a biobank of canine cancer tissues and a database to improve access to accurate and up-to-date information
  • Encourage research by awarding grants to the most deserving projects
  • Provide educational material for veterinarians and pet owners

The Midnight Foundation has contributed to create the first Canine Genome Atlas, with the purpose of accelerating  research in the field of  veterinary (and also human)  oncology,  through the collection and analysis of genetic data on a large scale, in order to improve prognosis and to adapt  therapies, making them more focused and effective.

The project was born in 2021 and it now offers  an inestimable richness of genetic data based on 770 canine cancer’s cases and 34 thousands variants.

All the data included in the canine cancer genome atlas are made available to the entire scientific community,  to create an international collaboration able to accelerate  research in the veterinary oncology field.
